Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

Mykonos is a place of fun, luxury and glamour… There’s no doubt about that. The luxury suites in Mykonos are definitely amazing, however there’s another side of the Island of The Winds too… A much more spiritual and historical one that’s certainly worth discovering!
When planning your trip, other than booking one of the most perfect luxury apartments in Mykonos and packing your vacation suitcases, you should also look into all the wonderful historical locations and sites you could visit, such as the Sacred Island of Delos, the magnificent Cycladic Churches or the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos.

The museum stands right in front of the seaside of the Old Port in Chora -Mykonos Town- and offers a multitude of preserved artifacts. It was created in 1904, though its exhibits date all the way back to the 1st century BC and its distinguished collection features pieces from the Prehistoric and Hellenistic periods. When leaving your luxury suite in Mykonos and coming to the museum you will be greeted by the statues of Aphrodite and Hercules, before entering the courtyard and the six exhibition rooms. The welcoming alone will make you feel like going into an ancient majestic world…

Most of the finds come from Delos and Rhenia, while there are also a very few from Mykonos, as well as from the close islands of Paros and Naxos. In 1872 the French School of Athens carried out several excavations on these locations, some of which are continuing to this day. Thus, the need for the museum was imperative in order to preserve and showcase these finds. According to the Ministry Of Culture And Sports, the collections you will come across include Funerary statues and grave stelae from the 2nd/1st century B.C., Clay figurines from the 2nd/1st century B.C., Pottery dating from the 25th to the 1st century B.C., as well as Jewelry and small objects of the 2nd/1st century B.C. So going out of your luxury apartment in Mykonos for a little while to explore those treasures would surely be worth your while…  One of the most well-known finds is a large relief pithos, a storing vessel dating back to the 675-650 BC., which depicts the Capture of Troy and the famous Trojan Horse. Unearthed in 1961, this unique piece of history was accidentally broken, but has now been restored and is displayed at the museum.

Booking a luxury apartment in Mykonos or a luxury suite in Mykonos and coming prepared to party or relax can be absolutely fantastic, but unraveling the island’s history can truly be magical… There are so many things we don’t fully know yet about the archaeological interest of each location, since excavations continue going on to this day, but every time we discover a little piece of a place’s ancient history, we become more bound to it and gain a memorable experience… Mykonos, as well as, all of the Greek Islands and locations have a very rich history indeed, so you shouldn’t miss the chance to relive it through the plethora of museums and grand sites!
